Interview with:
Andrew Wright (Intranet Owner)
What do you think staff like most about your intranet?
Being able to access it from anywhere in the world. Able to
complete any business task online. Able to post a question and
get a response from other consultants. Able to access a
repository of completed documents like case studies &
presentations.
What are its most popular uses & features?
The repository of completed deliverables. The 'I would like
to' page where staff can find out how to do any task within the
organisation.
How does your intranet add value to the business?
All our organisation's intellectual property is on our
intranet. The core of our business is information and knowledge,
so in effect the intranet is like our bank. If you spend 6 weeks
developing an intranet strategy, you want to be able to use that
research again if possible.
How do you make sure the intranet continues to meet your staff
needs?
We have a continuous feedback method where people can
suggest changes to the intranet. These changes are recorded in a
change request log and evaluated on a regular basis. We also
conduct regular surveys and run focus groups about how we can
improve the intranet.
How do you measure the success of your intranet?
We participate in the Worldwide Intranet Challenge
(WIC) every 6-12 months and measure our improvement. We have a
range of statistics we also measure such as volume of content,
page requests, and number of case studies.
What are your plans for the future?
To automate more business processes. To continue adding
content to our information repository. To develop a process for
integrating content developed through collaboration into our
formal information taxonomy.
What do you see as your biggest challenges in increasing
intranet acceptance and use?
Avoiding information overload and ensuring the
right content is available at the right time in the right
context.
What advice can you pass on to other intranet teams?
The intranet is always evolving and improving. Managing and
integrating these new requirements in a systematic and ongoing
basis is integral to a successful intranet.
